Roof leak or plumbing leak? How to tell the difference
Simple ways to guess where water may be coming from before help arrives.
Think about timing and location
Roof-related water usually shows up after or during rain, often near exterior walls or ceilings below rooflines. Plumbing leaks can appear anytime, including on dry days, and may affect areas near fixtures or inside walls.
Check what is above the damage
If the wet area is directly below a bathroom, kitchen or laundry, a plumbing issue is more likely. If it is under roof valleys, chimneys or exterior walls, a roof leak may be the better guess.
Use this as a starting point, not a final answer
These clues help narrow things down, but a proper inspection is still important. Knowing the likely source simply helps you call the right type of help sooner.
